To be healthy without spending a lot of money can be tricky, but it’s absolutely achievable.

Here are simple, doable tips to help you make it happen:
Move Daily
You’ve probably heard about the goal of 10,000 steps a day to stay active. While that’s great, not everyone has the opportunity to walk that much—whether it’s due to safety, city layout, time constraints, or physical limitations.
The good news is, there are plenty of ways to keep your body moving every day:
Simple Stretching
Gentle stretches in the morning or during breaks keep your body flexible and energized. The goal of stretching is to make the body more flexible, mobile, balanced, and relaxed, while reducing the risk of injury and improving overall physical comfort and performance.
Household Chores
Activities like laundry, washing dishes, or mopping the floor count as movement too! Household chores are an accessible, practical way to keep the body active, work muscles, support cardiovascular health, and maintain mobility, all while completing essential daily tasks.
Dancing
Participating to community Zumba dances, or using YouTube dance tutorials as a dance guide on the comfort of your home or simply dancing for fun, is a joyful way to get your heart moving. Dancing is a full-body, fun, and effective way to move daily!
Walking
Even at short or leisurely paces around your neighborhood can do wonders! Besides giving your senses a refreshing dose of the outside world, it’s a simple, free way to keep your body moving and boost your mental health every day.
Walking Your Dog
Every stroll with your furry friend is more than just a daily movement thing! It keeps them happy and your body moving, gives you both fresh air, and naturally lifts your mood. Plus, those wagging tails make even the shortest walk feel like a little daily adventure.
Cook at Home
I know some of us don’t always have the extra money, time or energy to cook. But worry not dear! I have few hacks you can consider to try to make cooking at home as cheap and healthy as possible:
Farmer’s Market
Get your vitamins the natural way by enjoying fresh fruits and vegetables, especially seasonal ones. Not only are they cheaper than bottled supplements, but wandering through the market adds a bit of daily movement to your day! And if you can, try planting your own veggies or herbs at home—growing your own food is not only budget-friendly, but it’s also rewarding and keeps you active.
Boil and Steam
Eggs, veggies, fish meat or pretty much anything you like (as long as its whole food). It’s low-effort, quick, and a much healthier option than frying every meal in oil.
Keep Snacks Simple
Trade your bags of chips to fresh fruit, peanuts, or veggie sticks. These are much cheaper and healthier! Do not forget to pair it with healthy drinks as well (teas, sugar-free coffee, lemon-cucumber water, or just plain crisp water!)
Plan Ahead
Make a weekly meal plan. Buying only what you need avoids waste.
Consider a Water “Diet”
Instead of reaching for snacks between meals, try drinking water instead. Not only does this keep you hydrated, but it also gives your digestive system a gentle break and helps save money. Simple changes like skipping late-night snacking or spacing out meals a bit can make a big difference. Just remember to listen to your body and do what feels safe and sustainable.
Reuse and Repurpose Things
It’s okay to treat yourself when you’re starting a new healthy lifestyle, but if you want to save money and stretch your budget, reusing and repurposing items can be just as effective—and fun!
Thrift Track Suits
Instead of buying expensive jogging pants and windbreakers, hit up thrift shops. It’s a fun way to shop, stay active, and get your gear cheaper!
Old Rugs or Carpets
Have some unused rugs or carpets lying around? They can be a great substitute for yoga mats. Just give them a quick wash, and you’ve got a budget-friendly workout space that adds a little extra movement to your day.
DIY dumb bells
If you enjoy a little DIY, you can make your own dumbbells at home. There are plenty of tutorials online, like these: How to Make a Homemade Weight Set, Lowes DIY Weights Guide
Repurposing not only saves money, it also sparks creativity and makes your fitness journey uniquely yours!
Spend Time With Family and Friends
Many of us think that spending time with loved ones has to cost a lot to be fun. But that’s not true! I included this in our list of tips for staying healthy on a budget because spending time with people who love you—and who you love—boosts your mental health, thus helping you stay healthy! Laughter, connection, and love are some of the strongest antidotes to cloudy times of our lives.
Here are some cheap and cheerful ways to enjoy your time together:
Board Games
A little friendly competition can create hours of fun and laughter.
Movie at Home
Home-made popcorn, dim lights, and a cozy cinema night without spending a fortune.
Living Room Coffees and Teas
Brew a cup, chat, and savor the simple pleasure of company.
Doing Errands Together
Turn everyday tasks into bonding time; it’s practical, productive, and surprisingly fun.
Tip💡 If you’re away from family and friends, try reaching out to local volunteering groups. Not only does this help fill the gap of lost connections, but it also brings purpose, new friendships, and a sense of community—boosting your mental health while giving back.
Meditate and Journal
If you are a Christian like me, make it a priority to spend time at church, in prayer, and journaling to keep your perspective aligned with our faith. After all, mental health, spiritual health, and a healthy body go hand in hand for living a balanced, fulfilling life.
